Match Report

Aldershot made a triumphant return to the Football League after a 16-year absence by winning 1-0 at Accrington Stanley.

It was the Shots first game back in the league since the demise of Aldershot FC in 1992 and they didn't disappoint.

Scott Donnelly's outstanding free-kick two minutes before half-time sealed the win and gave the travelling hoards plenty to celebrate.

Stanley, as is their custom at the Fraser Eagle Stadium, started strongly.

Robert Grant created plenty of threat down the left flank and almost got the hosts off on the right foot as he skinned Chris Blackburn and whipped a dangerous ball into the box.

Luckily for Aldershot, Anthony Charles mustered a last-gasp clearance.

Chris King was even thwarted by his own man when Paul Mullin deflected his goalbound 20-yard blast over the bar.

But Accrington's best chance came on the half-hour when Ian Craney turned brilliantly to beat Charles and then fed Mullin, but the big striker could only shoot straight at Nikki Bull.

Aside from a Ben Harding header that went just wide of the post, Aldershot offered little in the way of goal threat.

But two minutes before the break, they landed a sucker punch.

After winning a free-kick 25 yards from goal, Donnelly stepped up to curl a delightful right-footed free-kick into the top corner of the net.

The visitors came into their own after the break, stifling Stanley and finding more outlet for their own attacking ambition.

Despite getting forward with more conviction though, the Shots didn't really threaten home keeper Kenny Arthur.

Marvin Morgan did create an opening but blasted well over the bar, while at the other end Colin Murdock headed off target from a Peter Cavanagh free-kick.

John Grant hit the post late on as Aldershot saw out the remainder of the game.
