Colchester United began a new era at a new ground but they failed to mark this occasion with a victory following a stalemate against visiting Huddersfield.

The U's, following a 4-2 defeat at Hartlepool the previous weekend, will be happy though to have kick-started their League One campaign at their impressive new Weston Homes Community Stadium.

And they came closest to scoring a goal in a match of very few chances when winger Mark Yeates struck the woodwork just the before the half-hour mark.

Huddersfield midfielder Jim Goodwin tripped Anthony Wordsworth just outside the penalty area, and Yeates nearly made the visitors pay from this set-piece.

The Irishman tried his luck with a delicately chipped free-kick that beat keeper Matt Glennon all ends up, only to cannon off the top of the bar and drop to safety.

In fact Yeates was a constant thorn in Huddersfield's side and especially that of left-back Robbie Williams, who was booked for a blatant foul on the flying winger just before half-time.

The Terriers had to dig deep in the second half but they restricted Colchester to only a couple of late chances.

Striker Clive Platt screwed a shot over the top for the hosts midway through the second period, while substitute Scott Vernon saw his injury-time shot well smothered by keeper Glennon.

For Huddersfield, this was their second successive league draw of the campaign following a 1-1 result against Stockport last weekend.

They had appeals for a penalty turned down when Danny Cadamarteri had a shot blocked by Johnnie Jackson, with the U's midfielder appearing to handle while lying on the floor. But no penalty was awarded.

Experienced striker Andy Booth also squandered a late chance for the Yorkshire Club when he failed to convert a low cross by Gary Roberts from close in.

Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of the afternoon for Colchester was the attendance of just 5,340 for this historic first game at their new home.
